Union of Students in Finnish Univesities of Applied Sciences - SAMOK was founded 6 June 1996 in Helsinki. SAMOK was founded by the student unions in Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences and three other organizations: Suomen Tekniikanopiskelijoiden Liitto ry (Finnish students of Technology), Suomen kauppaopiskelijain liitto ry (Finnish students of marketing) and Suomen terveydenhuolto- ja sosiaalialan opiskelijoiden liitto - Terhol ry (Finnish students of Social- and health care). In the beginning the Union had an Executive Committee that consisted of eight (8) people, later reduced to seven (7).
The first Chair Person of SAMOK was Janne Nelimarkka fom Oulu and the staff consisted of a Secretary General, a tutor- and project secretary, an international secretary and a secretary responcible for sociopolitical issues.
SAMOK is a politically independent organization that at the moment represents about 130 000 students in Finland. SAMOK’s central duties are to promote, defend and extend the rights of students of Universities of Applied Sciences on a national level. SAMOK also supports the local student unions in their work and strives to keep students informed on what is going on, on a national level.
In the beginning the focus was on:

• Politics that concern Universities of Applied Sciences
• Tutoring
• International affairs
• Sociopolitical issues
• Information
The union is organized so that it has an independent economy that is based on the membership fees payed by the member unions together with external financial support and project financing.
